Finding the right personal care provider for you
A primary care provider (PCP) is a physician or other medical provider, such as a physician assistant or advanced practice registered nurse (APRN). These providers are often your first line of defense when you’re not feeling well, and your offense to help you staying healthy.
Your PCP can diagnose mild illnesses and minor injuries; help you manage chronic conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure; and works with other physicians who provide specialized care, like cardiologists or oncologists.
It’s important to establish a strong relationship with your PCP so that you feel comfortable discussing your questions and concerns and have a voice in your treatment plan. The first step in finding a provider is to select one that accepts your insurance and is conveniently located.
Once you find someone that checks those two important boxes, ask some questions to find out more.
- What is your approach to care?
- Why did you become a doctor?
- What do you wish more patients knew or did?
- How do you make decisions about treatment?
- What areas of medicine are you interested in?
- What was your background and training?
