Health Minute: COVID Safety Tips

 Jerry and Blanca spoke to Dr. Avni Jain, MD, about Covid safety tips as the numbers for Covid-19 continue to rise in the DMV.

The main way the virus spreads is from person-to-person when people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet) or through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes, even if they are not showing symptoms. These droplets can be inhaled into the lungs or people who are nearby. It is also possible to get COVID-19 from touching an object with the virus on it and then touching your mouth, nose or eyes. What is the best way to protect ourselves from the virus? Practice these healthy habits to keep you and those around you safe.

● Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after being in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol.

● Social distance. Keep at least 6 feet away from others if you must go out in public. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

● Wear a face mask that covers your mouth and nose when around others and in public. A face mask is meant to protect other people in case you are infected.

● Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, handles, desks, computers, phones, keyboards, sinks, toilets, faucets and countertops.
