While you’re dusting off the baseball bat and bicycle this spring, don’t forget to grab your protective head gear. We hate to think about ourselves or loved ones having a sports-related accident, but it is important to protect our brains.

A concussion is the most common type of traumatic brain injury, caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head that can change the way the brain normally works. Concussions can also occur from a blow to the body that causes the head to move rapidly back and forth.

You can help protect yourself and your family against concussions by always wearing the proper protective head gear, like a batter’s helmet in baseball, bike helmet, or catcher’s mask. Helmets should always be:

  • Well maintained
  • Age appropriate
  • Worn consistently and correctly
  • Appropriately certified for use

When a head injury occurs, you should watch for the following symptoms:

  • Headache or pressure in the head
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness or balance problems
  • Double or blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light or noise
  • Drowsiness
  • Poor concentration or memory problems
  • Confusion
  • Dilated pupils or difference in pupil size from left eye to right eye
  • Slurred speech
  • Seizures
  • Decreased or irregular pulse or breathing
  • Mood changes
  • Loss of consciousness

Athletes who have sustained a concussion may be confused about positions, forget instructions, move clumsily, or answer questions slowly.If you recognize any of these symptoms after head injury, it is important to stop activities and seek emergency medical attention. Reacting promptly to a concussion is vital to a quick and full recovery.
