Gen Xers caring for elderly parents
As Generation X navigates their 40s and 50s, they’re also becoming caregivers to their aging parents. Supporting your parents’ and children’s needs can feel like a full-time job. Check out these tips from Nurse Rose Melendez, RN, on how to balance caring for your elderly parents in your busy schedule.
Nearly half of Gen Xers expect to take care of their parents’ health and finances. It is important to evaluate the level of care that your parents’ may need day to day. Recognize if they’re able to do activities of daily living independently, such as:
- Functional mobility (getting in and out of a chair, bed, etc.)
- Bathing and Grooming
- Dressing
- Self-Feeding
- Personal Hygiene
Children may feel anxious, angry or sad about what’s going on within the family. It is important to step back and evaluate what is going on so that you maintain control of the situation. Creating a plan will help you prepare so you’re not living from crisis to crisis. Be sure to communicate with both your children and parents.
Treat taking care of yourself as part of your routine. Quality time away is important to serve both you and those for whom you’re caring. Some ways to take care of yourself are:
- Take it slow
- Talk to friends or family
- Ask for help when you need it.
- Know the resources available to you.
