WGTS Lung Cancer Awareness – Dr. Anyaoku

World Lung Cancer Day was August 1! Did you know lung cancer causes more deaths than breast, prostate, colorectal and brain cancers combined? Many people don’t think about their lungs until they experience trouble breathing. Ogechi Anyaoku, MD, with Adventist HealthCare shares some tips on lung health and avoiding risk factors of lung cancer.

Why is it important to keep our lungs healthy and what risk factors should we avoid?

Your lungs provide oxygen and keep other organs functioning by removing carbon dioxide from your body. Keeping them healthy is crucial for overall health. While smoking is the single greatest risk factor for lung cancer at 87 percent of all cases, other lesser-known risk factors include:

· Secondhand smoke

· Family history

· Radiation to chest area

· Lung diseases (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)

· Environmental factors (exposure to radon, asbestos, arsenic, beryllium, uranium, etc.)

· History of cancer in another part of the body

What are some symptoms of lung cancer to look out for?

Lung cancer symptoms include:

· A cough that won’t go away

· Coughing up blood

· Chest, back or shoulder pain

· Shortness of breath

· Wheezing

· Hoarseness

· Unexplainable Weight loss

How can we protect ourselves against lung cancer?

Access to screening options and education is vital for early detection and treatment. If you are a current or former smoker, and over the age of 55, you may be a candidate for a low-dose CT scan that can potentially detect lung cancer in its earliest stages. Here are some ways you can help prevent lung cancer.

· Quit or do not start smoking tobacco.

· Avoid indoor and outdoor air pollutants.

· Prevent infections by washing your hands often, avoiding crowds and getting your vaccinations every year.

· Test your home for radon.

· Engage in regular aerobic exercise to improve your lung capacity.
