Teenagers and young adults are partaking in a dangerous new trend. The rising popularity of vapes have parents suspicious. Nurse Rose Melendez, RN, discusses the dangers of vaping.

Vaping is a term used for using an e-cigarette. These devices produce vapor by heating a liquid containing flavored and harmful chemicals like highly addictive nicotine. This poses a lot of harmful health consequences because there is a myth that e-cigarettes are safer than using regular cigarettes, but we do not know the long term effects of those other chemicals.

While some e-cigarettes have fewer chemicals than burned tobacco products, they can still cause lung injuries or cancer. Some products contain more nicotine and other harmful chemicals than regular cigarettes. Nicotine is dangerous, no matter how it is distributed and can slow brain development in teens that affect:

  • Memory
  • Concentration
  • Learning
  • Self-control
  • Attention
  • Mood

If you are concerned that your child is vaping, talk with them about the dangers of any kind of smoking. Watch out for these signs of vaping.

  • Sweet scents on their clothing
  • Skin changes (more acne, slow wound healing and aging skin)
  • Nosebleeds
  • Increased thirst or decreased taste
  • Persistent cough
  • Shortness of breath
